Evolution of Computers
The journey of computers began with simple mechanical devices and has progressed through several distinct generations, each marked by significant technological advancements.
Early Computing Devices:
- Abacus: One of the earliest known calculating devices.
- Pascaline (1642): Developed by Blaise Pascal, it was an early mechanical calculator.
- Analytical Engine (1830s): Designed by Charles Babbage, considered the conceptual forerunner of modern computers. Ada Lovelace wrote the first algorithm for it.
Generations of Computers:
- First Generation (1940s-1950s): Characterized by the use of Vacuum Tubes. They were large, expensive, and generated a lot of heat. Examples: ENIAC, UNIVAC.
- Second Generation (1950s-1960s): Used Transistors, which were smaller, faster, cheaper, and more reliable than vacuum tubes. High-level programming languages like FORTRAN and COBOL emerged.
- Third Generation (1960s-1970s): Introduced Integrated Circuits (ICs). This led to smaller, more powerful, and more reliable computers. Operating systems were developed.
- Fourth Generation (1970s-Present): Marked by the Microprocessor and Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) technology. This led to the development of Personal Computers (PCs). GUI (Graphical User Interface) and networking became common.
- Fifth Generation (Present & Beyond): Focuses on Artificial Intelligence (AI), parallel processing, and natural language processing. Aims to create computers that can think and reason like humans.
