Overview
Understand UPI, its architecture, how to use UPI apps like BHIM, and the benefits of instant, real-time payments in India.
Unified Payments Interface (UPI)
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an instant real-time payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). It allows inter-bank peer-to-peer (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions through a single mobile application.
How UPI Works:
- Virtual Payment Address (VPA): Users create a unique VPA (e.g., yourname@bankname) linked to their bank account. This eliminates the need to share bank account numbers and IFSC codes.
- Single Click 2-Factor Authentication: Transactions are secured with a UPI PIN, making them quick and secure.
- Instant Transfers: Money can be sent or received instantly, 24/7, even on holidays.
Key Features:
- Request Money Option: Users can initiate a collect request and receive payments.
- Bill Sharing: Some apps allow splitting bills among friends.
- QR Code Payments: Scan a QR code at a merchant to make instant payments.
- Merchant Payments: Pay for goods and services online and offline.
Popular UPI Apps:
BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money) is the official UPI app developed by NPCI. Other popular apps include Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and various bank-specific UPI apps.
Benefits:
UPI has significantly boosted digital transactions in India due to its simplicity, speed, and security. It has become a cornerstone of India's digital economy.
Exam Tip:
Remember that UPI is developed by NPCI. Understand the concept of VPA and UPI PIN. Know that BHIM is the government-backed UPI app.
